If you have reasons for not attending the group, but would like assistance in your grief, Sandra Brackenridge, LCSW, Veterinary Social Worker at CVSEC or one of the closely supervised VSW Interns will meet with you or your family individually free of charge via Zoom.  We also can-do counseling by phone.  Please call CVSEC to request more information, a phone call, or to request an appointment:  972.820.7099.

Our Grief Counseling / Pet Loss Support Group began in March of 2013 after seeing so many of our Clients struggle with the loss of a beloved companion, whether through serious of prolonged illness or human euthanasia.  In the fall of 2013, we began accepting interns completing their Masters in Social Work with a Specialty in Veterinary Social Work.  Our Veterinary Social Work (VSW) program is supervised by a licensed clinical social worker.  The social workers provide the following support services, with the assistance of our Client Service Liaison.

Support when in Hospital:

When you visit our Hospital, it is due to an emergency or due to the need for Specialty Care.  We realize how emotional your visit may be. A Veterinary Social Worker or Client Liaison is available to support you, answer your questions about family members (including furry), facilitate information transfer about your Pet from the treatment area, and facilitate difficult decision making.  Sometimes you just need a friend and our Veterinary Social Workers can just be a companion for you while you wait.

Grief Counseling:  Our intention is to provide support and reassurance for those dealing with the intense emotions of grief due to Pet loss.  This is a significant loss for most people, and many are confused as to how intense their reactions may be.  We understand that Pets are members of the family, constant companions, and special friends.  The death of a Pet, the shock of loss, and resulting bereavement, are among the most profound emotional traumas we can experience.

We provide education in understanding the powerful reactions to a Pet's loss, which are normal but so very hard on the family / individual.  We will support you through your experience, and we follow up with you by phone for support.  We can meet with you individually, or you may attend our Pet loss group.

Pet Loss Support Group:  This group meets the second & last Saturdays of each month at the Hospital from 1:00 to 2:30 PM.  Reservations are not required.  We only ask that you bring a picture or pictures of your Pet(s) to share.  We hope that those further along in their grief will join to help others whose grief is fresh.  THERE IS NO CHARGE for this group support, and you may bring a friend with you.  Even if you are not a Client of CVSEC, this group is open to you.  It is led by either the Licensed Clinical Social Worker and/or by trained Veterinary Social Work Interns.
